  • [01] COMMISSION PRESIDENT VISIT

    President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso will be paying a one-day visit to Cyprus on Thursday, during which he will be meeting with the leaders of the two communities.

    According to the programme of the visit, Barroso will be received by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, and afterwards he will meet in separate meetings Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun.

    He will also host a lunch for President Christofias and Talat.

    Barroso will furthermore visit the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, followed by a meeting with President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian, before addressing the House plenary.

    Before departing from Cyprus, the Commission President will be giving a press conference and will attend a dinner hosted in his honour by President Christofias.

    [02] CYPRUS UAE AGGREMENTS

    Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates are set to sign two agreements to improve economic ties.

    Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides and the Deputy Minister for Financial issues at the Foreign Ministry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Khalid Al Gaith met here Tuesday and discussed issues concerning investment, tourism, and energy.

    Speaking after their meeting, Paschalides said that they agreed to sign agreements on the avoidance of double taxation and protection of investments. In addition they agreed to exchange visits of teams of technocrats and businessmen, he said.

    [03] HOUSE RESOLUTION - PARTHENON

    The House Committee on Educational Affairs has unanimously approved a resolution on the return of the Parthenon Marbles from Britain to Greece.

    The resolution will be promoted to the House of Representatives plenary for approval.

    The resolution was approved during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Tuesday in the presence of the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou and Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Vasilis Papaioannou.

    [04] FM - TURKEY - CYPRUS PROBLEM

    Foreign Minister MarKos Kyprianou has described as unfair and misleading a statement by the Turkish Prime Minister claiming that the Greek Cypriot side raises obstacles in the process to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Invited to comment on Erdogan statement after a lunch hosted by the Czech Embassy in Cyprus for the Ambassadors of the EU member states in the presence of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, Kyprianou said that it is both unfair and misleading.

    He expressed the belief that it is clear which side is constructive, who is submitting proposals that serve the interests of both sides on the island, constructive proposals which are in compliance with the desired solution, a bizonal, bicommunal federation, supported by the United Nations and the European Union.
