  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias assured on Monday that he would continue the struggle to achieve a viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem, despite any obstacles.

Addressing an event at the Presidential Palace in honour of Cypriots who fought in World War II, President Christofias said ``a solution should be based on a bizonal bicommunal federation, with political equality as defined in UN Security Council resolutions, safeguarding a single state, a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international identity.``

He added that the solution should ``restore the human rights of the whole of the people of Cyprus, based on international law, UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and the principles and values of the EU.``

President Christofias also assure the veterans that the state would continue to care for their welfare, noting that he would in general continue the struggle for a fairer society in Cyprus, in Europe and the world.

    [02] VERHEUGEN - CYPRUS - EU

Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Gunter Verheugen clearly stated that Cyprus accession to the European Union in 2004, with the Cyprus problem unsolved, was not a mistake. At the same time, Verheugen put an end to a debate caused by a statement he made after the referenda in April 2004 that he was cheated by the Greek Cypriots.

This belongs to the history, and President Papadopoulos, with whom I had good relationship, is now dead. I think it makes more sense to end this kind of debating, he said.

Verheugen was speaking at a press conference here yesterday, after a series of meetings he hold with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides.

During the conference he was asked if Cyprus accession to the European Union was a mistake. No, it was not. And I have never joined those who say it was a mistake, he said, adding that the simultaneous Cyprus accession to the EU and solution of the Cyprus problem was the right strategy.

[03] FM - EU- ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou requested the balanced distribution of resources among EU member states to tackle illegal immigration.

Speaking at the EU General Affairs Council meeting on Monday in Luxembourg, in the context of preparations for the European Council on June 18 and 19 in Brussels, Kyprianou said that Cyprus, due to its geographical location, receives a large number of illegal immigrants.

He requested that the text of the conclusions be strengthened concerning references to specific measures, noting that the handling of the problem should be based on solidarity among EU member states.

Kyprianou said Cyprus was in favour of the adoption of a comprehensive package of measures, and requested that cooperation between EU member states and third countries be enhanced.

[04] CYPRUS - EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL

Cyprus participated with great success in the European Film Festival that took place from 8 May until 4 June in South Africa and in Namibia from 26 May until 12 June with the movie Honey and Wine by Marinos Kartikis.

An official announcement said Cyprus participation took place in the framework of the events organised by the EU offices in Pretoria, South Africa and in Namibia, on the occasion of Europe Day.

All movies that were part of the festival were presented in the biggest towns of South Africa. Diplomats, Cypriots living overseas and scores of people watched the Cypriot movie and expressed great reviews.
