    The President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has assured that his wish and his effort is to find a solution to the Cyprus problem that will create the conditions for the people to gather and service the occupied churches and monasteries, which are part of the Cyprus cultural heritage.

    Addressing an event for the receiving of the Holy Images of Virgin Mary and Saint George from the occupied village of Filias, President Christofias expressed his commitment to continue the efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem that will be at the best interest of all the Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, will end the Turkish occupation and will safeguard the human rights and the freedoms of the people of Cyprus.

    President Christofias said that he is well aware of the difficulties of the negotiation process. At the same time, I remain committed to the target of the reunification of our homeland, and I will continue to fight, with consistency to the principles of the solution and with faith to our just struggle, he added.

    President Christofias also referred to the religion differentiation that exists in Cyprus, noting that this has never been the cause for conflicts.

    Finally, Christofias called the people of Cyprus to come together and with wisdom, unity and solidarity to achieve the major target of the islands reunification.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008 to reunite the island.

    [02] KYPRIANOU - GAER COUNCIL

    Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou departs Sunday, Jun 14, to Luxembourg, in order to participate in the General Affair and External Relations Council meeting, which will take place on 15-16 June 2009.

    According to an official announcement, issued here Friday, the Ministers will finalise preparation of the European Council meeting on 18 and19 June. In addition, the Council is expected to discuss in particular the Middle East, including peace process, Lebanon and Syria, as well as the Western Balkans, Cuba and Burma/Myanmar.

    [03] EXPIRED AIR DEFENCE SYSTEMS - DESTRUCTION

    Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas has expressed satisfaction for the successful destruction by the Republic of Cyprus, of 324 Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) 2SA-7, which have expired beyond their shelf life.

    According to an official press release, the destruction procedure of the last 20 of the 324 MANPADS took place on Friday in the presence of Ambassadors to the Republic of Cyprus, Chief of the National Guard, Commander of the United Nations Force in Cyprus, Commander of the British Forces in Cyprus, Representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Heads of Communities. The project was implemented with the support of OSCE and the technical assistance of the United States and the United Kingdom.

    [04] DCA - AIR TRAFFIC

    Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation released today figures on air traffic for April 2009.

    At Larnaźa airport, Cyprus` major airport, the figures, compared with April 2008, show an increase in flights by 3.9%, while passengers and cargo transportation increased by 10.2% and 18.9% respectively.

    Air traffic at Pafos airport for January 2009 recorded a decline in fights by 5.8%, whereas passengers and cargo transportation decreased by 10.9% and 78.6% respectively.
