  • [01] PRESIDENT CYPRUS - FUTURE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that the future of Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots alike, is in a united and peaceful homeland, in which international law and the European principles and values will be respected.

Addressing Wednesday evening the graduation ceremony at the European University of Cyprus, the Cypriot President stressed that Greek Cypriots will never seize being Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will never seize being Turkish Cypriots, but we must all feel Cypriots and love our country the same way, so that prospects for a happy future are created for our children and grandchildren.

The future of Cypriots, he said, is in a united and peaceful homeland, in which international law and the European principles and values will be respected.

    [02] CYPRUS PROTEST TURKEY VIOLATIONS

Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael, in a letter dated 4th June 2009 to the UN Secretary General, protested over a new incident of violation of Cyprus sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its air and maritime space, by Turkey.

Cyprus Permanent Representative notes in his letter that on 27 May 2009, while the Cypriot-flagged vessel EDT ARES was carrying out maintenance on an installation for the collection of meteorological information off the south-west coast of Cyprus, upon request of the competent authorities of the Government of Cyprus, it was approached by the Turkish corvette BEYKOZ F/503 asking to be informed of the work that it was performing. It was harassed by the same corvette for a number of hours before the latter eventually departed, Hadjimichael adds.

These actions create unnecessary confrontation and tension, which is in fact the intended purpose on the part of Turkey in order to intimidate the Republic of Cyprus and obstruct it from carrying out any activity in its exclusive economic zone, especially as regards the exploration and exploitation of its sovereign natural resources, Hadjimichael points out in his letter.

Cyprus Permanent Ambassador at the UN stresses that the Republic of Cyprus stands ready to continue the process of delimitation of its exclusive economic zone with all its neighboring states, pursuant to and on the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

    [03] GAROYIAN - GREEN ENERGY

Cyprus must turn to green energy as this is an invaluable opportunity for the country, which should not be seen as a short term solution, as towns suffocate from pollution, said Thursday House President Marios Garoyian, addressing a seminar organised by the Cyprus Wind Energy Association and the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation.

The seminar on green energy is held on the occasion of Global Wind Day celebrated on June 15 and aims to inform all institutions on the three forms of energy, wind, solar and biomass.

Garoyian said reversing the negative environmental balance and contributing to a new energy environment is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges of our times.

Renewable sources of energy, he said, create new business opportunities, more positions and guarantee stability while at the same time they upgrade the world climate system.
