  • [01] PRESIDENT TURKEY

At every step it makes, Turkey will find us in front of it, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has stated Friday, invited to comment on statements by Egemen Bagis, Minister for EU Affairs and the Chief Negotiator of Turkey, who said that he feels strongly the shadow of Cyprus in Turkeys EU course.

This is our answer to all those who claim we are letting Turkey continue its EU course unimpeded, the President said.

That has nothing to do with the truth. Surely, at every step Turkey will find us in front of it, the President said, adding that Turkey must end the occupation of Cyprus. Otherwise it will find us before it in its course and surely in December, he added.

The President said it is high time to convene for the National Council for an overall analysis of the developments concerning the Cyprus issue and an initial exchange of views. After that, I will meet the party leaders for an exchange of views on issues and on Turkeys EU course and possible reaction, he added.

    [02] ZIMBABWE PRESIDENT CYPRUS

President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has said that his country condemns the continuous occupation of Cyprus by Turkey and assured he would continue supporting the just cause of the people of Cyprus.

President Mugabe received recently the credentials of new High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Harare, based in Pretoria, Argyros Antoniou, who informed him about the recent developments of the Cyprus issue and the prospects for further enhancing bilateral relations.

According to an official press release, President Mugabe stressed that the two communities in Cyprus should be the ones to solve the Cyprus problem without foreign interventions.

He also expressed the wish that the ongoing negotiations, which began last September between the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus with a view to reach a Cyprus solution, have a positive outcome and lead to a just, viable and functional solution.

    [03] DIMITRA 2009 EXCERCISE

Large scale military manoeuvres, code-named ``DIMITRA 2009``, will be held June 11 14, a press release issued by the Cyprus Defence Ministry has announced.

The manoeuvres will be directed by the National Guard General Staff and relates to the implementation of the National Guards system concerning administration.

The manoeuvres will comprise two phases in the government controlled areas of the island, which has been divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Formations of regular units and other units will participate in the exercises. In addition to that, reservists will have to present themselves at their units.
