  • [01] EU STUDY CULTURE CYPRUS TURKEY

European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth Jan Figel has sent a letter of reply to Cypriot MEP Panayiotis Demetriou, which creates expectations for community funding of a study to record the damage and cost of restoration of destroyed monuments in the areas of Cyprus under Turkish occupation.

In his letter, Demetriou had requested information from the Commissioner regarding the study, the cost of which had been incorporated in the Community Budged for 2008, after an amendment submitted by the Cypriot MEP had passed.

Figel, in his reply, explains the reasons for not carrying out the study in 2008, noting that it is due to delays by the Turkish Cypriot community in giving its consent and that he is optimistic that the study will be conducted in 2009.

The study concerning Cyprus` cultural heritage is a follow-up of the statement regarding derelict churches in the Turkish occupied areas, which had been submitted by Demetriou and Italian MEP Iles Braghetto in April 2006.

Demetriou and Braghetto had obtained the signatures of 403 MEPs and the statement became a resolution of the European Parliament in July 2006.

The implementation of the study will mark the commencement of EU engagement in protecting cultural heritage, including religious heritage, in Cyprus.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] CYPRUS SWEDEN EU

One of the main priorities of the Swedish EU Presidency on environmental policy will be to reach an international agreement in Copenhagen regarding climate change, the Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren has said.

Speaking after presenting the priorities and aims of the Swedish Presidency on environmental policy in a meeting in Nicosia Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Michalis Polynikis, Carlgren pointed out that the Swedish Presidency is very ambitious on this issue.

There is no plan B and we expect a result in Copenhagen, he said, adding that one of the main issues will be to make sure that sufficient emission reductions will be agreed by the developed countries but also by emerging economies like China, Brazil, South Africa.

    [03] CYPRUS PTMB FOUNDING MEMBER

Cyprus has become a founding member of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Technology Platform for Maritime and Marine Research Innovation and Training (PTMB).

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber recently participated in the launching of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Technology Platform for Maritime and Marine Research Innovation and Training (PTMB), as the shipping industry`s representative in the Cyprus delegation, which also included a representative of the Department of Merchant Shipping.

The aim of the Chambers participation in the Cyprus delegation was to assist the Cyprus Maritime Administration to become a member of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Technology Platform and to create its own Technology Platform, to promote the Chambers strength on maritime expertise, best practice and know-how, and to help steer discussions and develop projects that will benefit Cyprus Shipping and the Chambers members. The launching of the Platform took place on May 18 in Rome, Italy.
