    Uruguay President Tabare Vasquez Rosas has reaffirmed that his country will continue to support a solution of the Cyprus problem based on international law principles.

    Ambassador of Cyprus based in Madrid Nearhos Palas presented his credentials to the President of Uruguay on May 6.

    In a brief meeting that followed the presentation of the credentials, Palas thanked the President for the consistent and based on principles of Uruguay to support a Cyprus settlement and briefed him on the latest developments in the Cyprus question.

    He also conveyed to the President of Uruguay the greetings of President Christofias and expressed his appreciation for the participation of Uruguay in the UN Peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYPP.

    President Vasquez praised the friendly relations between the two countries and reaffirmed that his country will continue to support a settlement of the Cyprus problem based on the principles of international law.

    Pallas also had a meeting with Foreign Minister Gonzalo Fernandes to discuss issues of bilateral relations and briefed him on the current phase of the Cyprus problem. He also had the opportunity to meet with other officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with whom he discussed issues of cooperation between two countries.

    [02] GREECE - OVERSEAS CYPRIOTS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

    The unconditional support of overseas Cypriots living in Greece in the struggle of the people of Cyprus for national survival, is expressed in a resolution of the meeting of the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in Greece that convened in Athens from 23-24 May.

    In the resolution, the organizations ascertain the continued Turkish intransigence for 35 years and occupation of 34.7% of the Republic of Cyprus which is now European territory, the policy of ethnic cleansing together with the continued movement of Turkish settlers to the occupied areas, the fact that one third of the population has been displaced in its own country, while there are still missing persons, as well as the unacceptable demands for recognition of the illegal regime and the obstacles raised in finding a viable, fair, democratic and functional solution to the Cyprus problem in the framework of the UN.

    A solution, the resolution said, should reject any thought for separate states and confederation and should safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all lawful inhabitants of Cyprus, especially the three freedoms (property, settlement and movement.

    [03] CYPRUS - ROMANIA - AGREEMENT - ACADEMIC DEGREES

    An agreement concerning the mutual recognition of academic degrees for the entry and continuation of studies in higher education institutions of Romania and Cyprus was signed during an official visit to the country last week by Education and Culture Minister Andreas Demetriou.

    An announcement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Education also said that Demetriou participated in a forum entitled UNESCO Forum on Higher Education in the Europe Region: Access, Values, Quality and Competitivenessť.

    [04] CYPRUS - WOMEN`S VOLEYBALL TEAM - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

    Cyprus women`s volleyball team secured top place in the final phase CEV`s European Championships 2009 - Small Countries Division after beating Luxemburg with 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-15).

    Following its victory over Lichtenstein on Saturday with 3-0, Cyprus prevailed over Luxemburg with 3-1 and secured the first place in the rankings, despite its defeat by San Marino in the final phase`s premiere.
