  • [01] CYPRUS EIF AGREEMENT

The Republic of Cyprus and the European Investment Fund (EIF) have signed an agreement worth of 20 million euro to support Small Medium Enterprises (SME) in Cyprus.

The agreement was signed under the JEREMIE initiative (Joint European Resources for Micro to Medium Enterprises), a European Commission and European Investment Bank joint initiative, aiming at facilitating SME access to finance through specially designed funding products in EU member-states and EU regions.

The EIF, which under the agreement has been appointed as the JEREMIE Holding Fund Manager, in cooperation with local financial establishments, will be responsible for the design and implementation of the suitable funding products such as loans, guarantees and business funds in support of selected SMEs.

    [02] EUROBAROMETER CYPRUS EU ENLARGEMENT

Cypriots believe by vast majority (72.5%)that the integration of Central and Eastern Europe countries into the European Union has contributed to job losses at their country, according to a Eurobarometer survey conducted in February 2009.

This is one of the highest percentages in the EU with the average percentage of responses from citizens by other member-states reaching 55.7%. The survey was carried out on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, which led to the enlargement of the EU with the integration of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Cypriot respondents by 55.9% believe that the changes brought by the fall of the Iron Curtain and the consequent enlargement made life more insecure in their country, whereas the EU average percentage of respondents was 51%.

[03] CYPRUS PORTS AUTHORITY ESPO GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Cyprus Ports Authority has been selected to host the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) General Assembly in 2011.

According to a press release, issued here Tuesday by the Authority, it was chosen to host the Assembly during a televoting on April 2 in Brussels, at a meeting of the ESPO Executive Committee.

More than 300 people, representing all European ports, will have the opportunity to get to know the Authority and Cypruss sea ports as well as the island in general.
