[01] ZERIHOUN - CYPRUS TALKSDiscussion on European Union matters in the framework of the direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus was good and substantive, according to the UN.In statements after the 23rd meeting of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the context of direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun also said that it was possible that the leaders would move to economic matters after their discussion on EU next week. In his remarks after the meeting, Zerihoun told reporters the two leaders met for one and a half hours and following the tete-a-tete talks, for two hours they had discussions on EU matters on the basis of the work done by the experts last week and this week. The leaders have agreed to meet again next Tuesday morning to continue these discussions. He also announced that before that there will be two back to back meetings, one tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3pm and then on Thursday at 4pm of the representatives and the experts who will prepare the ground for the meeting of the leaders on Tuesday. Asked how the meeting on EU matters went, Zerihoun replied its been a good discussion. As you know the EU matters was one of the issues on which there has been quite a lot of convergence and on which there was a joint paper that came out through the working groups. So the discussion was thorough and substantive and it is an engaged process. To a question how long does he envisage the meetings on the EU to continue, Zerihoun said I dont know, frankly, but certainly they have agreed to meet again next week on this issue. He said the leaders could decide to suspend the discussions and allow the experts and representatives to continue narrow the gaps as they have done with governance and move on to economic matters the following week. It is possible that that may be the case, he added. Asked if they will come back to the property issue, Zerihoun said yes, eventually they will come back to us again but it is now left at the level of the experts and the representatives. Indeed, this is the process. It is a rolling start, he remarked, noting that not everything should be taken up by the leaders, so they deal with issues and then refer them back to the working groups and the representatives with guidance and bring the issue back to them for final discussion. President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Talat began direct negotiations in September last year with a view to solve the question of Cyprus, which has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded the island. The meetings are held in the UN Protected Area of Nicosia [02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TALKSCyprus President Demetris Christofias has said there is a gap in the views of the two sides in Cyprus on the various aspects discussed during direct talks on the Cyprus question, noting however that there is the potential to bridge the gap and that the work must be intensified. In statements to the media after his 23rd meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the framework of direct negotiations which began in September last year, with a view to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem, Christofias said they continued their discussion on European issues. He said their meeting was a good one in general, without generating feelings of euphoria, adding that working groups will continue their work on the various aspects of the European issues on Wednesday and Thursday, with the aides of the two leaders, George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami with a view to try and have more convergences by Tuesday when he will meet again with Talat. [03] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS QUESTIONCyprus House President Marios Garoyian has stressed the Greek Cypriot sides commitment to the ongoing direct negotiations on the Cyprus question, with a view to reach a settlement providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, on the basis of UN relevant resolutions and EU principles.Garoyian, who was speaking during a meeting he had with a nine-member delegation of the Canadian House of Commons, which is paying a visit to Cyprus, said that the Cyprus settlement must safeguard fundamental human rights of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins. [04] EUROCONTROL OFFICIAL - CYPRUS - TURKEYErik Merckx Deputy Director of Central Managements at EUROCONTROL said here Tuesday that the lack of coordination between Cyprus` and Turkey`s Air Control Centres creates a problem in the region with regard to flight safety.Turkey, which invaded Cyprus in July 1974 and in 1983 proclaimed the so-called TRNC in the northern occupied part of the island, which is recognized only by Turkey, refuses to cooperate with Nicosia Area Control Centre and instructs aircrafts on a southbound course to Cyprus to contact ``Ercan airport`` ATC which is not recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO only recognises the legal government of Cyprus and has issued instructions to aircraft operators to obey only Nicosia ACC when in the Cyprus FIR.
