  • [01] EP CONTACT GROUP WITH T/Cs - PRESS CONFERENCE

The climate that has been created in Cyprus is extremely more hopeful than in the past and with the improvement of the climate a lot of things that were not possible in the past are now beginning to become real, European Parliament High-Level Contact Group for Relations with the Turkish Cypriot Community in the northern part of Cyprus Deputy Coordinator Mechtild Rothe told a press conference on Friday, at the end of the Groups mission to Cyprus March 4-6.

This is the last mission of the Group to Cyprus in its current composition, before the European Parliament elections to be held in June. Speaking through an interpreter, Rothe said that a new Contact Group will be formed after the elections and that many of the current members of the Group will not participate to it as some of them will not even run in the elections.

Rothe said their visit was very important and interesting and gave them a lot of hope that things will be better in the future. We hope that in the immediate future we will be able to come back to a reunited Cyprus, where people from both sides will live united and will be EU citizens and that both sides will be able to elect their representatives to the European Parliament.

    [02] CYPRUS - ``EDUCATION 2009`` EXHIBITION

Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Antonis Paschalides has said that the Cyprus government has been investing a significant amount of money to further develop infrastructure in the field of education, apart from adopting a stricter legal framework and creating mechanisms for the evaluation and the certification of the level of tertiary education.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the 11th International Exhibition Education 2009 held in Athens, Paschalides said that the Cyprus Ministry of Education is currently working on a programme of educational reform, aiming to build a modern and effective educational system, that will be able to address the financial and other challenges deriving from the globalization of many aspects of modern life.

Paschalides stressed that Cyprus has significant geographical, economic, cultural and other advantages to become the ideal destination for studies for students from Greek and other countries.
