  • [01] SPOKESMAN - OLGAC - MISSIN PERSONS

The government will continue to inform the international community on the issue that has arisen from the self-confession of Turkish actor Attila Olgac that he killed ten Greek Cypriots during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

Replying to questions on Wednesday after a Cabinet meeting, Stephanou said that the government has decided to act on two fronts.

Firstly, to raise the issue at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which is the watchdog for the implementation of ECHR decisions, he said. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the Republic of Cyprus` fourth interstate application has asked Turkey to cooperate fully in the investigation into the fate of missing persons in Cyprus.

[02] NEW AMBASSADOR OF GEORGIA - CREDENTIALS

New Ambassador of Georgia to Cyprus, the first stationed on the island, Vladimir Konstantinidi said on Thursday that Georgia supports a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem and is in favour of negotiations between the two communities to reach a just and mutually accepted solution under the aegis of the UN.

Presenting his credentials to President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, Konstantinidi said the Cyprus problem remains unresolved but the courageous steps taken from the very beginning of Demetris Christofias` Presidency gives the confidence of achieving durable resolution of the problem.

Receiving the credentials, President Christofias reaffirmed his commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation with single sovereignty, single citizenship and single international personality, embodying political equality as defined in the relevant UN Resolutions, adding that he would spare no effort towards achieving a successful outcome of the ongoing negotiation process.
