[01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - MEETINGThe leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, will hold Wednesday their 17th meeting in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations, which began last September with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.During the meeting, which will take place at the UN protected area of the old now defunct Nicosia airport at 10.00 a.m local time, the two leaders will begin discussions on the property issue. Their last meeting took place on January 16 during which they concluded discussions on governance and power sharing. UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer has described the last meeting as very positive, adding that good progress was made and that during their next meeting on 28 January they will start discussions on the property issue. [02] CYPRUS - ECHR - OLGAC`S CONFESSIONThe Cypriot government has decided to raise to the Council of Europe`s Committee of Ministers Attila Olgac`s confession that he killed ten Greek Cypriots during the 1974 Turkish invasion to Cyprus as well as to lodge an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou announced.Olgac, a Turkish actor told a live TV show in Turkey last Wednesday that during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus he killed ten Greek Cypriots, one of them a 19-year-old soldier, taken prisoner of war, who was killed in cold blood. Olgac subsequently retracted his confession, claiming he was actually talking about a film scenario. Olgac`s confession was discussed during a meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Cyprus Attorney-General Petros Clerides. ``During the meeting it was decided that the issue will be brought to the CoE`s Committee of Ministers in the framework of 4th interstate application of Cyprus against Turkey, and at the same time to appeal to the ECHR,`` the Spokesman said. [03] CMP - CALL FOR INFORMATIONThe Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, renewed its call to all those who can give information which could assist the effort of determining the fate of the missing, to approach the CMP.In a statement issued following the publication ``of various reports in the media about events which happened in 1974 in Cyprus and which may concern the fate of persons unaccounted for,`` the CMP reaffirms ``that within the framework of its mandate to determine the fate of the missing persons, it is duty-bound to follow up on any piece of information that reaches it.`` ``In this respect, it wishes to renew its humanitarian appeal to all, in Cyprus or elsewhere, who were involved collectively or individually in 1964 or 1974, who know or are in a position to assist in finding out relevant information, to approach the Committee and help it in this difficult task,`` the release notes. [04] PASCHALIDES - EU DEVELOPMENT MINISTERS MEETINGCyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides departs Wednesday for Prague, to participate in the Informal Meeting of, to take part in the EU Development Ministers meeting to be held 29 30 January 2009.Speaking after a meeting with the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Pashalides said that this would be the first meeting of the EU Development Ministers, responsible for Energy issues, under the auspices of the Czech Presidency. Among the issues to be discussed, will be the decrease of carbon dioxide emissions, Paschalides said, noting that the Republic of Cyprus will ask for exceptions and extensions on the implementation of the regulations. We have already taken some exceptions and we will continue to ask for exceptions due to the fact that Cyprus is a small and isolated island, which does not have the opportunity to cooperate with neighbouring countries, just like other European countries do, he said.
