Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou has met the EU Commissioner for
Enlargement, Olli Rehn, in the framework of regular contact between the
two sides. During the meeting, they reviewed the latest developments in
the UN-led direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, currently underway
between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot
communities, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement that will
reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Kyprianou and Rehn also discussed the course of implementation of the
financial regulation to help develop further the Turkish Cypriot
community.
In Brussels, the Cypriot Minister represented Cyprus at the EU General
Affairs Council.
[02] PRESIDENT 2008 TOP ATHLETES
Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has stressed that the state will
continue and intensify its efforts to support any coherent planning
towards real progress in athletics.
Addressing the award-giving ceremony of Cyprus top athletes for 2008,
organised here Monday by the Cyprus Sportswriters Union, President
Christofias said that 2008 was probably the most important year in the
history of Cypriot sport. He added that a series of special successes
and international distinctions achieved by our male and female
athletes, both in individual and team athletic events, is testimony to
this.
These successes have caused feelings of emotion to all of us and filled
us with pride, he pointed out. He also noted that it has been proven in
practice, once again, how important the role of athletic successes is
as far as promoting Cyprus is concerned.
