The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, will hold today their 16th meeting in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations, which began last September with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

During the meeting, which will take place at the UN protected area of the old now defunct Nicosia airport, the two leaders are expected to conclude discussions on governance and power sharing.

Their last meeting took place Monday, 12th of January.

In statements after Mondays meeting, UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor for Cyprus, Alexander Downer said that the two leaders discussed relations between the federal government and the constituent states. They also talked about deadlock resolving mechanisms.

He added that these discussions would continue during the next meeting (today), adding that after the leaders conclude their discussions on governance and power sharing, they will begin, at a meeting to be announced today, discussions on property.

President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since early September last year, aiming at reunifying the island, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.
