  • [01] PRESIDENT SETTLEMENT PLAN

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has expressed readiness to draft a settlement plan for the Cyprus question along with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

We will write it down, we will agree together about the settlement plan. This is the goal of the talks, Christofias said, invited to comment on Talats statement that he wants a settlement plan.

In statements Monday before leaving the Presidential Palace for his 13th meeting with Talat, in the framework of the direct talks, Christofias said that during this meeting he will reply to Talats positions on external relations and will further discuss the issue.

President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since early September this year, aiming at reuniting the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] GREEK FM CYPRUS ISSUE

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis has said that the settlement of the Cyprus question remains the main target of the Greek government`s policy.

We are pursuing the reunification of Cyprus, in a just, viable and functional way, on the basis of a bicommunal, bizonal federation. We are pursuing a settlement to the benefit of all citizens of the island that will secure their prosperity. A settlement that will vindicate the expectations of Hellenism all over the world and will contribute to the stability and peace in our region, she added.

Bakoyiannis said that everyone supports President Christofias and the Cypriot political leadership in their effort to terminate the unjust and unacceptable situation which has been continuing for 34 years and expressed hope that Turkey itself will realize that a Cyprus settlement is to the benefit of the Turkish people as well.

[03] PRESIDENT - NEW JUSTICE MINISTER

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias stressed here Monday that the aim of his government is to establish a modern and reliable Correctional System and Law Enforcement institutions that will not expose the state, but will play their role appropriately in a democratic rule of law, protecting the life and the esteem of the citizens of the Republic.

Christofias was speaking during the affirmation ceremony of the new Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca, who replaced Kypros Chrysostomides, who resigned last Wednesday, in the wake of an escape by Antonis Prokopiou Kitas, sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder. Kitas was in a private hospital when he escaped on December 12. An inquiry is underway into the circumstances of his escape.

On his part, Louca thanked President Christofias for entrusting him with this task, and assured him that he will do his utmost to vindicate his choice. Addressing the new Minister, Christofias said that the post of the Minister as any other public post, wins recognition when its holder spares no efforts to solve the problems of the society.
