[01] PRESIDENT EUROPEAN COUNCILPresident of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, departs today for Brussels to participate in the European Council.The EU -27 heads of state and government will mainly discuss the world financial crisis. President of the European Commission Manuel Barroso has said that the EU Council will address three major issues: the economic recovery, climate change and the Lisbon Treaty. The EU Council is the last to take place during the current six-monthly EU rotating presidency, which France holds at present. The Czech Republic will assume the EU presidency in January next year. The Republic of Cyprus became a full EU member state in May 2004. [02] FINANCE MINISTER ECONOMYCypriot Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis has said he is cautiously confident about the prospects of the economy in 2009, as the global financial crisis continues.The Cypriot economy, as an open economy, will inevitably be affected from the slowdown in the global economy but we remain cautiously confident that we will do much better than the rest of the EU,`` Stavrakis told a gathering hosted by the Cyprus Union of Bank Employees (ETYK). The Minister recalled that 2008 will close with a 1% fiscal surplus and an 11% reduction in the public debt, namely from 60 to 49%, which, as he added, corresponds to savings amounting to two billion euro. ``This is a very valuable fiscal weapon which might be utilised to support any bank or other sector of the economy which faces any problems,`` he said. [03] MINISTER EU MARITIMEMinister of Communications and Works Nikos Nikolaides has welcomed the adoption of the third package of measures on maritime safety by the European Union Transport, Telecommunications and Energy (TTE) Council.In statements after the Council, the Cypriot Minister said that the third package strengthens the levels of vessel safety, as well as the protection of maritime environment and enhances the passengers rights as regards maritime transport. Nikolaides said that Cyprus, being a country of important maritime infrastructure and know-how, plays a leading role in shaping European maritime policy. Cyprus, with its know-how and experience in the field of maritime transport, participated actively in drafting the third package of measures on maritime safety, since some of our positions, which aim at reinforcing the international maritime legislative framework and the international conventions, have been adopted, the Minister said.
