    Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou leaves for Brussels on Friday evening from Helsinki to attend on 8 and 9 December, the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting.

    French Foreign and European Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner will chair the GAERC monthly meeting that brings together the 27 EU foreign affairs ministers, the European Commission, and the Secretary-General of the Council and High Representative for the CFSP.

    The ministers will prepare the European Council meeting of the 27 Heads of State and Government on 11 and 12 December whose agenda will focus on three subjects: economic and financial issues; the future of the Lisbon Treaty; and the energy/climate package for which the French Presidency is seeking a comprehensive agreement, in close consultation with the European Parliament within the framework of the co-decision procedure.

    [02] CZECH AMBASSADOR INTERVIEW

    Turkey has to fulfill all its obligations in the framework of its negotiations with the European Union, which would like to see Ankara be supportive of the process for a Cyprus settlement, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cyprus Jan Bondy has said.

    In an interview with CNA, the Ambassador advocated a unified Cyprus, backed the ongoing dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, pointed out the importance of confidence building measures and said education is a good starting point to find a common language between the islands two communities.

    The Czech Ambassador, whose country will assume the six-monthly EU rotating presidency on 1st January 2009, said that the EU Czech presidency is planning to open two new chapters in Turkeys accession negotiations, taxation and social policy and employment.

    Referring to the priorities set out by the Czech Presidency, Bondy referred to a competitive Europe, tackling energy and climate change, and an open and secure Europe.

    [03] SLOVAK JUSTICE MINISTER CYPRUS VISIT

    Slovak Deputy Prime Minister for Legislation, Minister of Justice Stefan Harabin will pay an official visit to Cyprus from 7 to 10 December.

    During his stay in Cyprus, Harabin will hold official talks with Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Kypros Chrysostomides.

    He will also hold meetings with Cyprus Attorney-General Petros Clerides and Supreme Court President Petros Artemis.

    The Slovak Minister will also visit the headquarters of the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in Nicosia.

    [04] CYPRIOT COMMERCE MINISTER - ALGERIA

    Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Antonis Pashalides will pay an official two-day visit to Algeria, 6-7 December, as a part of contacts to investigate the supply of liquid gas.

    An official statement said that the visit follows the Ministers October trip to Cairo and is part of the preliminary contacts to investigate the supply of liquid gas.

    During his visit, Pashalides will meet Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Chakib Khelil and will also hold contacts with officials of the state energy and oil Company of Algeria Sonatrach.
