[01] AIDES - MEETINGGeorge Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, aides of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat respectively, have codified the convergences and divergences between the two sides on issues discussed by the two community leaders at the UN-led negotiations.Iacovou and Nami met solely to record the views and positions submitted by the two sides on governance. Their next meeting is scheduled for December 10. ``We have agreed on texts in which the convergences and divergences between the two sides on the competencies of the federal executive, the legislature and the judiciary as well as the independent officers are recorded,`` Presidential Commissioner Iacovou told the press after the meeting. Asked if this will assist the negotiations, Iacovou said these texts are drafted in such a way that each of the leaders can easily compare the positions of each side, something which, he noted, will assist further discussion and negotiation. He added that during the negotiations the two leaders discuss freely the various issues at hand and at a later stage these discussions are processed ``in a more detailed language.`` ``This is very helpful because President Christofias can compare the areas of convergence and the areas of divergence,`` Iacovou noted. [02] PRESIDENT - UNSG - EEZPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has sent a second letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in which he protests the continuation of Turkish harassments against research vessels within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)of Cyprus. In his letter to the UNSG, dated 25 November 2008, President Christofias notes that subsequent to my letter of 14 November 2008, at least three serious incidents took place involving the harassment of research vessels by Turkish warships in the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus. I find myself in the unpleasant position of expressing my dismay over the continuation of such aggressive actions, the Cypriot President says. The Cypriot President`s letter is accompanied by a letter from the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Minas Hadjimichael addressed to the UNSG. [03] ECHR - DEMADES - TURKEYThe European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has dismissed a demand on behalf of Turkey to reexamine its decision in the case of Demades v. Turkey, issued in April 2008, and has called on Ankara to pay 830,000 euros to the applicant for compensation plus interest, as well as 5,000 euros for court expenses, rendering the April decision final.Commenting on the decision, Ioannis Demades` lawyer, Achilleas Demetriades, said this was a "significant step" by the ECHR in reaffirming that the owner of property in the Turkish occupied areas remains the person whose name appears on the deeds. He added that the compensation ordered by the ECHR does not deny the owner of his property but is merely compensation for loss of use. The ECHR decision was given to the parties in writing and renders the 22 April 2008 decision final, since the Court dismissed Turkey`s demand to reexamine the specific decision. [04] AHI - LARIGAKIS - INTERVIEWExecutive Director of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), Nick Larigakis, has said that the US government should exert its pressure on Turkey, so that Ankara stops interfering in the process, which began in September between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem. In an interview with CNA, Larigakis said that the US should be calling now for the withdrawal of the Turkish troops, which occupy Cyprus since the invasion of 1974 and expressed disappointment that the US and the EU have not stressed enough Turkey`s violation of international law in Cyprus. He described Cyprus an even more important nation for US interests than Turkey and pointed out that Turkey has proven not to be a faithful ally of the US. The Cyprus issue, he noted, is number one on list of AHI`s policy priorities and added that they would send a letter to US President and Vice President elect, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, reminding them of their pre-election statements on Cyprus. In his interview with CNA, Larigakis said also that the US should have supported its ally Greece in the issue of the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
