    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said that the Greek Cypriot sides good will for a solution of the Cyprus issue is declared and understood by the international community, expressing his belief that the other side will approach these positions so as to reach a settlement.

    Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Historic Labour Museum of PEO, and invited to comment on the optimism expressed by UN Secretary General`s Special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer about the outcome of the direct negotiations, President Christofias said: ``The United Nations always express optimism. If they expressed pessimism the story should have ended``.

    President Christofias reiterated that the negotiations process is difficult.

    ``We are at the beginning, he said and added that self-control and self-restraint instead of rushed positioning and decisions are requested. We entered this process aiming to solve the Cyprus problem and will do our outmost; he stressed underlining that this will happen if of course, the other side wants too.

    Asked about a statement he made that sometimes there is a difference of philosophy between the two sides, President Christofias said that sometimes positions might be expressed, which show a difference in philosophy.

    ``This does not means that we should rush to draw the conclusion that the one side wishes for one thing and the other wants the opposite``, he said.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - MEETING ON FINANCIAL CRISIS

    President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has convened a meeting on Friday to discuss in detail the support plan of the economy which is being drawn up by the government in order to tackle the possible repercussions caused by the global financial crisis.

    The meeting was announced here Monday by the Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis after a meeting held at the Ministry of Finance and attended by Presidents and senior executives of both Cyprus commercial Banks and co-operative credit institutions.

    One is expecting that most likely final decisions will be taken, Stavrakis noted.

    In response to a question, Stavrakis assured that Cypriot economy is still running in a very satisfactory manner, in relation with other countries, which are facing huge problems, noting that those countries need to draw up extraordinary plans of economic actions was way more urgent.

    [03] GAROYIAN - ARMENIAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

    Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian expressed his satisfaction for the cooperation between the parliaments of Cyprus and Armenia, in the framework of international organizations, assuring that Cyprus wants to contribute to the promotion of the visions and strategy planning of Armenia, playing a bridging role between its European partners and the states which are friendly to Cyprus, such as Armenia.

    Addressing the plenary of the National Assembly of Armenia, where he is paying a two-day official visit, Garoyian noted the intention to broaden the relations between the two countries in the financial and trade field, and briefed the Armenian MPs on the Cyprus question and the ongoing direct negotiations aiming at the settlement of the Cyprus issue.

    He expressed the gratitude of Cyprus for the stable and based on principles support of Armenia to its just struggle for the reunification of the country and the people, through a peaceful dialogue to achieve a just and viable settlement.

    Garoyian referred to his Armenian origin, while talking about the Armenian genocide, he noted that Cyprus was the country who welcomed the Armenians who fled after the genocide.

    He also stressed that Cyprus based on positions of principles supports the Armenian people and its just causes without hesitation.
