  • [01] EUROPEAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEES - MEETING

With the participation of 75 delegates from 38 countries, the Cyprus Olympic Committee is organising from 31 October until 1 November, in the coastal town of Larnaca, the VIII Technical Seminar of the European Olympic Committees. The COC has said, in a statement, that the seminar is regarded as a very significant event for the European Olympic movement and participations have exceeded all expectations.

The main speaker of the event, which is entitled From talents to medals - Planning for the sport technical programme to London 2012 and beyond is Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

Among the issues which will be examined are the results of the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 in comparison to Athens 2004. The seminar will also address the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship Programme, evaluate the programme for European NOCs and discuss whether Olympic performance in Europe is still in the lead. The seminar will also look into planning programmes through the eyes of an athlete, as well as innovations and technology in elite sports and new ways of cooperation with other partners in society.

[02] BRITISH FS - CYPRIOT FM

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has called for compromises by both sides at the ongoing peace talks between the leaders of the islands two communities, noting that the gains for both sides will be so important that it will be worthwhile. Milliband was speaking after meeting, in the British capital, his Cypriot counterpart Markos Kyprianou.

In his statements, the British FS said the two had a very good discussion and took forward subjects covered by the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Cyprus and the UK last June. Most of their time, he added, was taken by the Cyprus issue and they also discussed European matters, bilateral relations and subjects related to the Balkans. Miliband referred to the role played by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and he praised the latters determination, to see the talks will lead to a solution.

Answering a question about the guarantees, he said that obviously you know very well our position on the guarantees. What we have said all along is that we want the talks to proceed successfully and we are determined that we are not going to stand in the way, the British Foreign Secretary said. Of course, he added, compromises are necessary and also decisions which are necessary for a sustained solution.
