  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - MEETING

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will meet on Wednesday, 22 October, in the UN protected area, the UN announced here Tuesday.

Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia (UNPA) on Wednesday 22 October 2008, starting at 10 a.m. a UN statement said.

Alexander Downer, UN Secretary Generals special adviser for Cyprus, had said after last weeks meeting that the leaders continued their discussions on the powers of the executive, the presidency and the vice-presidency in the framework of direct negotiations aiming to solve the Cyprus question.

Representatives of the two leaders and experts met on Thursday under UN auspices where they continued the discussion.

President Christofias and Talat began talks in early September with a view to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS TALKS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias assured on Tuesday that he would not walk out of the direct talks he is engaged in with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which aim at a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The President warned that any pressure that might be attempted on him would bring about the opposite effect.

Replying to questions, President Christofias said it was unnatural for a modern country to have foreign guarantees or custodians, adding that the issue of guarantor powers is being discussed ``for 34 years or 30 years at the negotiating table.``

Cyprus 1960 constitution stipulates that Greece, Turkey and Britain (former colonial power) are the guarantor powers of the countrys independence and territorial integrity. The Turkish Cypriot side insists that Ankaras guarantees are maintained in any agreed settlement of the Cyprus question.

The President expressed regret at the continuing public statements by the Turkish Cypriot leadership and reiterated his firm position that he will discuss the various issues at the negotiating table.

    [03] CSE - UPGRADE

The Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) has been upgraded to the Frontier Category by the FTSE Global Equity Index Series.

According to a CSE announcement, this positive development was officially announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Federation, held on October 13-14 of 2008 in Milan. The meeting was attended by CSE Chairman and the CSE General Manager, Giorgos Koufaris and Nontas Metaxas respectively.

With this upgrading, the CSE joints a category, which includes the modern stock exchanges, which are observed by foreign institutional investment firms and analysts.
