  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT TURKEY

Turkey`s election as a non permanent member of the UN Security Council is an absurd decision, Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian had said.

Expressing his disappointment, Garoyian added that it is really absurd a country that violates UN resolutions, occupies a UN and EU member-state and disregards human rights and the UN charter, to be elected as non permanent member of the UN Security Council.

He added that this development does not help the UN, because it sends the message that the Organization legalizes the candidacy of a country that condemns and violates the UN charter.

The House President pointed out that the election of Turkey as a non-permanent member-state of the UN is a step back, in accordance with the UN sensitivities for countries that violate human rights and constitute a threat for international or regional peace, stability and security.

    [02] EDP DECLARATION CYPRUS

The European Democratic Party points out that the solution of the Cyprus problem should be compatible with the European Acquis and based on the European values and principles as well as the human rights and UN resolutions.

The position is outlined in a declaration that was published here, Saturday, after the partys meeting in Nicosia.

EDP believes that the solution should be just, democratic, workable and viable and that no intervention rights should be vested in any foreign country.

The existing mechanism of guarantees in Cyprus, which emanates from the 1960 agreement, is anachronistic and should be abolished, as Cyprus is part of the EU which has the proper institutions to provide adequate guarantees for a country-member of the EU, the declaration mentions.

EDP is also strongly in favor of EUs closer involvement in the procedures towards the solution to the problem. It is the partys conviction that this will, inter-alia, ensure that the European principles of abolishing artificial divisions are respected, so that both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots live together in a united island without any ethnic or other segregation.

    [03] RADIOMARATHON 2008 - BEGINS

The 19th Radiomarathon, a two-day annual fund-raising charity event, began officially on Sunday with fund-raising events across the free areas of Cyprus.

Radiomarathon in aid of children with special needs is organised by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and Marfin Popular Bank.

On Saturday, the Presidential Palace opened its gates to children with special needs, who had the opportunity to talk and lunch with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias who pledged that the Presidential Palace will always be open for these children.

The Radiomarathon will culminate on Monday and Tuesday, with 52 kioks open in every town of the free areas of Cyprus to accept donations, 12 piggy-bank cars on tour to collect money from villages and marches, sport and other charity events. Events are also held overseas where Cypriots reside.
