  • [01] PRESIDENT EUROPEAN COUNCIL CONCLUSIONS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said Thursday he was satisfied with the conclusions of the European Council, which took place in Brussels 15-16 October.

Speaking to the press in Brussels, President Christofias emphasised on three issues included in the conclusions, the financial crisis, illegal immigration and energy.

Referring to the financial crisis, he said the EU leaders decided to strengthen the financial system of the member states and said that Cyprus` position is that the problem must be tackled by its roots.

He expressed the position that the Cyprus economy will not be affected by the crisis, noting that the existing financial system in Cyprus offers more stability.

The Cypriot President noted that the Cypriot commercial banks and cooperatives have not invested in ``toxic products``.

But he noted that the government remains vigilant and is studying measures.

On immigration, the Cypriot President said that Cyprus is facing a very serious problem of illegal immigration.

``Cyprus is facing a very serious problem of illegal immigration, which is becoming more severe due to the Turkish occupation and the fact that illegal immigrants come to the government controlled areas through the area which is occupied by Turkish troops. We deem that the EU decision is taking into consideration our own concerns``, he said.

He also expressed hope that the EU decision will help minimise the problem, noting that the problem will be solved when Cyprus is reunified.

``We hope that this decision will help us minimise the problem``, he said, noting that the problem will be tackled when Cyprus is reunified and the future united Republic of Cyprus and its federative government exercise control over the whole island and its shores``, he said.

Regarding the EU decision to use by 2020, 20% of green energy, he said that the conclusions bear in mind the special circumstances of some countries, like Cyprus, ``which, being an island, is isolated and can not have any connection to energy sources in Europe``

He added that Cyprus does not have the means to respond immediately to the EU goal but said that the government is already taking the necessary steps.

President Christofias expressed satisfaction with the fact that a special agreement can be achieved for countries like Cyprus.

    [02] IACOVOU NAMI MEETING

Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talats adviser Ozdil Nami exchanged Thursday views on the issue of governance, in view of the next meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Talat, in the framework of direct negotiations on the Cyprus question, which began last month.

Iacovou said after the meeting that Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Talat are currently discussing the issue of the executive authority, in the framework of the governance chapter.

He added that Christofias and Talat asked their advisors, Iacovou and and Nami, respectively to discuss other relevant issues and that in this framework they discussed for two hours, and each side elaborated on its positions.

He noted that the meeting went on smoothly and that all that have been said will be recapitulated during Christofias and Talat meeting on Wednesday.

Invited to say if his meetings with Nami can help to achieve real progress, Iacovou said that the President had asked for a series of clarifications for the positions expressed by Talat.
