[01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - EURO ZONE MEETING
Cyprus President Demetris Christofias leaves Sunday for Paris to attend
the extraordinary Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the
Euro Zone.
The purpose of this meeting is to define a joint action plan for the
euro zone countries and the European Central Bank to deal with the
current financial crisis.
Christofias will be accompanied by Finance Minister Charilaos
Stavrakis.
[02] CYPRUS - COMPETITIVENESS INDEX
Cyprus Global Competitiveness Index ranking has significantly improved,
according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2008-2009 released by
the World Economic Forum.
Cyprus ranks 40th in the Geneva- based organization`s annual rankings
of 134 nations. In 2007 Cyprus was at the 55th place. As concerns the
ranking of EU countries, Cyprus is positioned in the middle, with 13 EU
countries having secured high scores and 13 EU countries lower scores.
The United States tops the overall ranking in The Global
Competitiveness Report 2008-2009. Switzerland is in second position
followed by Denmark, Sweden and Singapore. European economies continue
to prevail in the top 10 with Finland, Germany and the Netherlands
following suit. The United Kingdom, while remaining very competitive,
has dropped by three places and out of the top 10, mainly attributable
to a weakening of its financial markets.
