  • [01] ELDERS - CYPRUS QUESTION

The Elders said here Thursday they have come to Cyprus at what they believe is an auspicious moment in the history of the country, to encourage the two community leaders in their efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Chairman of the Elders, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former US President Jimmy Carter and former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Brahimi were received here by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, as they continued their contacts on the island.

``We had a very happy meeting actually, a confirmation of the high regard we have for the two leaders and we believe that we were quite right in coming``, said Archbishop Tutu after their hour-long meeting with Christofias.

``We have come at what we consider to be an auspicious moment in the history of Cyprus, where two outstanding young leaders want to lead this beautiful place to a solution``, he remarked.

``And the world is waiting, as it were with bated breath``, said Tutu, adding ``we can say that from our meeting we were quite right in our assessment of the President, here is someone with vision and a deep commitment to the people of this island``.

``We have come to encourage both of them in this wonderful, rendezvous of history``, he concluded.

The visit takes place as President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat prepare to meet again on Friday to continue the dialogue on the substance of the Cyprus issue, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] KYRENIA MUNICIPALITY - BRUSSELS

Mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Kyrenia Maria Ioannou and a delegation of the Enlightenment Committee of the municipality will travel on Thursday to Brussels to take part in a series of meetings to discuss issues concerning Kyrenia refugees and developments regarding the Cyprus issue.

A Kyrenia Municipality statement said that during their meetings, the delegation will call for the return of Kyrenia refugees to their homes, as demanded in UN resolutions and the acquis communautaire. They will also demand the withdrawal of all illegal Turkish settlers and troops from the island.

The Committee will hold meetings with member of the European Parliament Foreign Relations Committee George Demetrakopoulos and Cyprus Permanent Representative in Brussels Andreas Mavroyiannis.
