  • [01] GREECE - ITALY - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Presidents of the Hellenic Republic and Italy, Carolos Papoulias and Giorgio Napolitano respectively, have agreed on the precondition that the Cyprus problem must be solved before Turkey`s EU accession negotiations continue.

Speaking after a meeting with Napolitano in Athens, Papoulias said it is unacceptable for Nicosia, a European capital, to be divided, and reiterated to his Italian counterpart the significance of implementing international law and good neighbourly principles by all countries wishing to join Euro-Atlantic institutions.

Napolitano said a precondition for Turkey`s EU course was ``the solution of the Cyprus problem, a thorny issue, which has been tormenting Greece and the EU for many years.``

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - ARCHBISHOP DEMETRIOS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Archbishop of America Demetrios have discussed ways to promote the cultural aspect of the Cyprus issue.

President Christofias briefed the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America on Monday over developments in the Cyprus issue and thanked him for his support in efforts to promote the Cyprus cause.

The two examined ways to make use of cultural diplomacy with regard to Cyprus.

We have talked about joint possible initiatives which we could undertake concurrently to promote the political problem of Cyprus as well as its rich cultural heritage; through cultural diplomacy, the President said, adding we are at his disposal and his Beatitude is willing to help in this direction.

    [03] COMMISSION - TURKISH CYPRIOTS

The European Commission has announced the launch of the second call for a proposal of the grant scheme Schools Initiative for Innovation and Change.

According to a press release, issued by the EC, the second call will give grants of between 10,000 and 50,000 euros to pre-primary, primary and secondary schools in the northern part of Cyprus.

Overall, up to 745,000 euros will be available. The grants are financed from the 259 million euros EU aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.

    [04] CYPRUS - MIGRATION POLICY

The Republic of Cyprus is putting forward a new migration policy that incorporates a specific integration policy and aims at the realisation that integration does not, in any way, affect the rights of the local population, Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis has said.

The Minister also said that the absence of a readmission agreement between the EU and Turkey intensifies problems Cyprus is facing, given that the vast majority of illegal immigrants arrive in the islands northern Turkish occupied areas and are filtered through to the southern government controlled part of the country.

We need to build capacity in both countries of origin and destination in order to formulate coherent migration policies, in a holistic way, he told a conference on Conflict, Conquest and Migration organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society in the coastal town of Larnaca.
