  • [01] KYPRIANOU - REHN - ACQUIS

EU Member States and not the European Commission will decide whether or not to accept permanent derogations from the European Acquis communautaire in a possible solution of the Cyprus problem, Marcos Kyprianou, Cyprus Foreign Minister has said.

In addition, Kyprianou has wondered by whom the Turkish Cypriot side has been assured for permanent derogations from the European Acquis communautaire and for making provisions of the possible solution, EU primary Law.

Speaking after a meeting with foreign officials, Kyprianou rejected that the statement, made by the Commissioner for Enlargement Oli Rehn could be interpreted in favour of permanent derogations from the European Acquis communautaire in a possible solution of the Cyprus issue.

Oli Rehn has said that ``the EU can accept any solution agreed by the two communities, as long as a united Cyprus respects the Union`s founding principles of liberty, democracy and the rule of law, and is able to carry the obligations of EU membership.``

    [02] UNDP-ACT - PROJECTS

The UNDPs initiative Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT) announced Friday in Nicosia the start of the second phase of peace-building projects in Cyprus for 2008-2011.

Speaking at a public briefing at Ledra Palace, UNDPs Programme Manager, Jaco Cilliers, talked about how joint projects designed and implemented by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, had already demonstrated the benefits of peaceful coexistence.

We have learned that over the past three years practical cooperation and contact on common issues form a solid basis for mutual understanding between the two communities, he said.

He also referred to a recent research, according to which 80% of Greek Cypriots who participated in bicommunal projects and 77% of Turkish Cypriots said that bicommunal projects can contribute to reconciliation.

The past three years, he added, have shown a steady increase in acceptance of social interactions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and significantly the majority of those who have contact with people from the other community believe that it was a positive experience.
