    [02] EUROPEAN WOMENS LOBBY CAMPAIGN

The European Womens Lobby (EWL) is launching today its European-wide Campaign No Democracy without Gender Equality, which aims to increase the presence of women at the highest level of European politics.

The campaign will be formally launched by Myria Vassiliadou, Secretary General of the EWL and Board Member of the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS)

In 2009, Europeans will elect a new European Parliament and a new European Commission will be appointed, the campaign notes, adding that these elected and nominated persons are going to shape our future in Europe, and the 50/50 Campaign for Democracy aims to ensure that women and men are equally represented among them.

Women, the Lobby says, are currently still under-represented in all European institutions where decisions are made which affect our lives. With the 50/50 Campaign for Democracy, we at the European Womens Lobby want to push for concrete action to increase womens presence in politics.
