    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said here on Thursday he could not predict whether the chapter of governance and power sharing will close during his next meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on September 18.

    Christofias and Talat began here today direct negotiations on the substance of the Cyprus question aiming at a comprehensive settlement of the problem. The first item on the agenda is governance and power sharing.

    Christofias said no statements will be made after his meetings with Talat, adding that the UN will issue a short press release.

    Invited to say if he was still self-confident as he had said in the morning, before the talks, Christofias said he was always self-confident.

    Invited to say if the chapter of governance will close on September 18, Christofias said he could not make any predictions. We will continue on the 18th, he concluded.

    Asked if he was satisfied with todays negotiations, he said this is not the time to say if I am satisfied or not.

    [02] DOWNER TALKS MEETING

    UN Secretary General Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer has said that talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, who began on Thursday direct meetings on the substance of the Cyprus question, were productive and fruitful.

    Downer noted that the leaders have begun negotiation on the subject of governance and power sharing adding that the talks have been productive, the talks have been fruitful, and they will continue negotiations on the 18th of September. Furthermore he said that the next issue on their agenda was the issue of property.

    Responding to a question, Downer said there have been no particular time lines agreed, and obviously both leaders are doing what they can to push the process at an appropriate speed. So it has been a good discussion today and there is obviously a long way to go since this is the very beginning of the process, he said.

    Asked if Christofias and Talat just talked or negotiated, Downer said there have been negotiations.

    He also said that there will be a continuation of discussions on the governance and power sharing subject, as has been stipulated before, and then will be moving on to the property issue.
