[01] US - CYPRUS TALKSUS State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said the US support the efforts of the two sides in Cyprus to reach an agreement on the Cyprus problem, adding that the US support a bizonal, bicommunal federation.He noted that, although the Cyprus problem is a hard issue, it can be resolved and expressed support for the direct talks between the leaders of the two communities. Asked about reports that the US government on 23 May 2008 exerted pressure on President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, during his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, to accept a ``partnership of two constituent states based on political equality,`` as envisioned in the previous revision of the Annan, Plan, McCormack said he ``cannot speak to this particular report.`` ``I can tell you that we support the efforts of the two sides to come to an agreement. We have long supported a bizonal, bicommunal federation as a solution. This is a long standing issue. It is a hard issue but it is one that can be resolved, in our view. We fully support the sides coming together,`` he added. Asked if the US still take into consideration the Annan Plan in the direct talks, McCormack said he was ``sure previous efforts inform current efforts, as they should.`` ``There is a lot to be learned from history. It is now a matter of the two sides coming together. And we, as well as others in the international community, fully support that,`` he added. [02] NEW SUPREME COURT PRESIDENTPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias appointed Petros Artemis President of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday.The new President of the Supreme Court will be sworn in on September 12, at the Presidential Palace. [03] GAROYIAN - SLOVAK EMBASSYPresident of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian signed the book of condolences at the Slovak Embassy in Nicosia, for the lives lost in a tour bus accident on September 6.``It is with profound sorrow that I was informed of the tragic tour bus accident, in which 14 Slovak citizens lost their lives and many more were seriously injured, while travelling from Kosice to Croatia,`` Garoyian wrote in the book of condolences. He added that ``on behalf of all members of the House of Representatives and on my behalf, I extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families and our heartfelt wishes for speedy recovery to the wounded.`` ``Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with them all, as well as with the friendly people of the Slovak Republic and their leadership in these difficult moments of mourning and recuperation,`` he concluded. Following the signing of the book of condolences, Garoyian and Ambassador Anna Turenicova held a short meeting. [04] CHRISTOFIAS - ARESTI - SILVER MEDALPresident Demetris Christofias has sent a telegram to Cypriot athlete Antonis Aresti, congratulating him for securing a silver medal in the 200m sprint at the Beijing Paralympic Games.``Congratulations for your great triumph of winning, on your own merit, the silver medal in the 200m sprint at the Beijing Paralympic Games and giving Cyprus yet another great success. You have made us all proud. I extend my heartfelt wishes for every success in the 400m race,`` President Christofias says in his telegram.
