  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Sunday that his first meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on September 3, in the framework of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, will be procedural and no discussions on the substance of various issues will be held.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from Beijing, President Christofias said they would be entering substantive talks during their second meeting on September 11, noting that the first few meetings would deal with governance matters.

Replying to questions, President Christofias said "we are entering a very serious process and we must all be very careful, the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey."

Asked if the situation in Georgia was affecting developments in Cyprus, President Christofias said any conflict in the world certainly did not contribute to creating the preconditions for world peace and the solution of local or regional problems.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - CHINESE PRESIDENT

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Sunday China considers Cyprus to be its best friend in Europe, noting that this was an honour for the state, the people and the island as a whole.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from China, where he attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, President Christofias said he had various political meetings there, the main one being with the President of China.

President Christofias pointed out that the meeting lasted half an hour, adding that ``this great country considers small Cyprus to be its best friend in Europe, an honour for all of us, the state and our small island.``

He thanked the Chinese President and his government for their clear positions regarding the Cyprus problem, in defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the Republic of Cyprus.

President Christofias said his Chinese counterpart made specific suggestions regarding the development of bilateral relations in the economic, cultural, tourism and education sectors. ``Of course we responded,`` he added.

    [03] PRESIDENT - OLYMPICS

Cyprus should be proud of the participation of two Cypriot athletes in the men`s skeet final at the Beijing Olympic Games, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias has said.

Speaking on Sunday at Larnaca Airport, returning from Beijing, President Christofias said that he returns back to Cyprus very happy and very satisfied.

Cyprus went very well, despite the athletes and the fans sadness for the loss of the medal in the men`s skeet final, he added.

President Christofias stressed that all should feel proud because "our small country, among 200 countries, participated in the men`s skeet final with two athletes," and also because Andri Eleftheriou secured the seventh position in the overall ranking in women`s skeet.

Anna Stylianou also went very well by breaking the Cyprus record in the freestyle 100m and 200m swimming, President Christofias noted and wished for the Cypriots athletes to return back to Cyprus healthy and with the best impressions from the unique Chinese hospitality.

    [04] FAMAGUSTA - RESOLUTION

The Mayor and the Municipal Council of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta have expressed certainty that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias will fight for a solution of the Cyprus problem with determination and consistency.

This statement is included in a resolution calling for the return of Famagusta, under Turkish occupation since 1974, to its lawful inhabitants. The resolution was adopted on Saturday by the Famagusta Municipal Council, in a public meeting at Dherynia Cultural Centre, on the south of this eastern coastal city, to mark the 34th anniversary since the town was captured by the advancing Turkish troops in the summer of 1974.

The resolution calls for the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants and points out that a step in that direction would be the immediate return of the fenced off area of Famagusta, now under the Turkish occupation.

We consider that the Famagusta issue should be immediately put in the table as a confidence building measure that will significantly improve the climate for the promotion of the talks, and which also benefits both communities in Cyprus, the resolution adds.
