    [02] PRESIDENT - FOOTBALL

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has sent telegrams congratulating Cypriot football clubs for their results in games in European event qualifying rounds.

Cypriot champions Anorthosis are just one game away from becoming the first Cypriot team to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage after beating Greek champions Olympiacos CFP 3-0 on Wednesday, in Larnaca, in the first leg of the third qualifying round.

In the UEFA Cup first leg of the second qualifying round, cup winner APOEL drew 2-2 at home with Red Star of Belgrade, while Omonia beat Greek AEK 1-0 in Athens.

In his telegrams, President Christofias says ``these sports achievements upgrade Cypriot football and Cypriot sports in general, promote our country internationally and make us all proud.``
