  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - BEGINNING OF NEGOTIATIONS

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat decided to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3, with the aim to reach a ``mutually accepted solution to the Cyprus problem which will safeguard the fundamental and legitimate rights and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots``.

A joint statement read out by UN SG Special Representative to Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun noted that the solution would be put to separate simultaneous referenda.

This was the two leaders` fourth meeting, during which they undertook a final review of the technical committees and working groups, set up after their first meeting on March 21.

[02] BRITISH MPs - DRAFT RESOLUTION - MARONITES OF CYPRUS

British MPs have tabled a draft resolution calling on the British government and the international community to assume ``urgent action`` to facilitate the return of the Maronite Community of Cyprus to their four villages in the Turkish-occupied since 1974 northern part of the island with a view allowing them ``to restore and maintain their vibrant cultural and religious identities.``

The draft resolution, tabled by labour MPs Alan Meale, Rudi Vis και Edward Ohara as well as conservative Robert Spink, recalls that that as a result of the tragic events connected with Turkey`s illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974, all four Maronite villages namely Kormakitis, Asomatos, Karpasha and Ayia Marina ``lie isolated within the occupied northern area of the island.``

The draft points out that their communities, approximately 6,500 residents, have been dispersed asunder as refugees, having fled their homes, land and communities in fear of their lives.``

[03] CYPRUS - UNIVERSITY - FACULTY OF MEDICINE

The Council of Ministers approved, during its last session, the regulations regarding the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine in the University of Cyprus.

According to an announcement, issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine in Cyprus is an important step forward to the efforts being made for turning Cyprus into an international and regional centre of higher education and research.

In addition, the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cyprus will provide lifelong postgraduate training to Cypriot doctors and nurses. This is something that will benefit the public as well as the private hospitals of Cyprus, it is added in the announcement.
