According to well-informed sources, Ban Ki-Moon believes that Cypriot President Demetris Christofias will work hard for a political settlement.

He also expressed his readiness to contribute in every way to efforts for a solution in Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The UNSG noted that the process towards a solution is a matter which concerns the two communities in Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot.

On Friday, the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet for the fourth time since Christofias assumed office in February 2008. They are expected to undertake the final review of the Working Groups and Technical Committees, set up to prepare the ground for fully-fledged negotiations.

They are also expected to decide whether and when to begin direct talks for a Cyprus settlement.

Meanwhile, Cyprus Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, held a meeting Tuesday with Ban Ki Moon ahead of his departure from New York. Mavroyiannis will undertake a new post in Brussels as head of the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU.

The Cypriot Permanent Representative thanked Ban Ki - Moon for the excellent cooperation they have had, his interest as well as his efforts in promoting a Cyprus solution in the framework of his good offices mission.

[02] DOWNER UNSG MEETING

On Wednesday, he will hold a long meeting with UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe, followed by a meeting with Ban Ki Moon. During his three - day stay in New York, Downer will hold separate meetings with several Permanent Representatives, including Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN. He is expected to visit Cyprus end of July, beginning of August.

Downers meetings are taking place as the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat prepare to meet for the fourth time since Christofias assumed office in February 2008. They are expected to undertake the final review of the Working Groups and Technical Committees, set up to prepare the ground for fully-fledged negotiations. They are also expected to decide whether and when to begin direct talks for a Cyprus settlement, that will reunite the country which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

[03] KYRENIANS RESOLUTION

Kyrenians, who organised Tuesday evening a gathering to mark the occupation of Kyrenia by Turkish troops in 1974, said the UN should exert pressure on Turkey to abandon its partition plans for Cyprus and work for a just, viable and functional solution of the problem, based on international law and the EU acquis communautaire.

The resolution is addressed to the UN Secretary General and the five permanent members of the Security Council, the President of the Republic of Cyprus as well as the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives, the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Parliament and the leaders of the European Parliaments political groups.

[04] OCCUPIED AREAS CHILDREN SETTLERS

Sylikiotis said the study shows the extent of illegal immigration from Turkey to the Republics northern occupied areas.

According to the study, 34% of the school children have parents who are citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, 37% are children of parents who are Turkish settlers, 9% have one of the parents who is a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus and 19% have origin from parents who have the so-called citizenship of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime.
