  • [01] HOUSE LISBON TREATY

The debate on the Lisbon Treaty will take place July 3 during a House Plenary Session, which is expected to approve the Treaty.

Presiding Thursdays plenary, MP Christos Pourgourides said the session will start at 09:30 (06:30 GMT) so that there will be time for the debate and the voting for the ratification of the Treaty.

Leading government party, left wing AKEL has decided to vote against the Lisbon Treaty.

The Movement of Ecologists-Environmentalists, which discussed the issue last Sunday, has decided to abstain from the voting to show its disapproval for the discussions on the Treaty taking place in the EU and Cyprus. The main opposition Party, DISI is expected to vote in favour of the Treaty and so will the Democratic Party (DIKO) and the Social Democrats.

    [02] PRESIDENT INTER RELIGIOUS CONFERENCE

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, will attend the Inter-Religious Conference titled ``Peace in the World and the Middle East`` which will be held in Nicosia between 16 18 November.

The President received Friday at the Presidential Palace Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II and the founder of the Community of Saint Egidio, a Roman Catholic non governmental organisation, Professor Andrea Riccardi, who jointly organize the Inter-Religious Conference.

In statements after the meeting, Archbishop Chrysostomos II said that President Christofias informed him he would attend the Conference, which will also be attended by political and religious leaders.

    [03] GAROYIAN JULY MEETING

House President Marios Garoyian said he has restrained expectations as regards the meeting of 1st July between the leaders of the two communities in the frame work of the Cyprus procedure, since almost everything depends on Turkeys policy.

The Turkish officials, he said, continue to express views and positions which are far from the international law as well as the principles and values on which the EU is founded, noting that it is clear that Ankara is committed on the issue of virgin birth and on issues that clearly do not help the making of substantial progress nor clear the scene regards the basis of negotiations.

Therefore, he said, the main concern of the international players is to put pressure on Turkey to clear its positions as regards the basis of negotiations along the same lines on which the international community is moving all these years.

    [04] LEDRAS REPAIRING WORKS

The repair of the forefronts of the buildings along the crossing point in Ledra street will begin in September, the Mayor of Nicosia Eleni Mavrou has said.

The works were scheduled to begin before summer but they had to be delayed due to some technicalities, Mavrou added. According to the new timetable, the works are expected to be completed in a period of three months.

Ledra street, one of the main commercial streets in Nicosia, opened last April for the first time in nearly 40 years.
