  • [01] IACOVOU - NAMI - MEASURES

Top aides to the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities will announce on Friday a series of agreed measures in the areas of discussions of the bicommunal technical committees, which have been meeting for the past couple of months as part of efforts to resume substantive negotiations.

Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou said on Thursday that he and Ozdil Nami, aide to the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, will announce at a joint press conference tomorrow the issues on which agreement has been reached.

``As instructed by the two leaders, we have examined the work of the seven technical committees and assessed where convergence or agreement has been reached,`` Iacovou said after his meeting with Nami.

The two aides have not set a date for a meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Talat, but according to Iacovou they have talked about this issue.

``When there is a decision, of course we will announce it,`` said Iacovou, expressing hope that this could be announced tomorrow.

Replying to questions about the Christofias-Talat meeting, he said ``there is a gap and this gap lies in the need to use a common language, and if you will, share common goals and the same vision. So far, this has not been achieved and we will make every effort to achieve this objective,`` Iacovou said.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - LISBON TREATY

President Demetris Christofias, in Brussels for the EU Summit, has discussed with European Parliament President Hans Gert Poettering the Cyprus problem and the Lisbon Treaty, after its rejection by the Irish people.

According to reliable sources, Poettering enquired about the Treaty`s ratification process in Cyprus. President Christofias told Poettering that the debate on the Treaty is set for July 3 during a House plenary session, which is expected to approve the Treaty.

The ratification of the Treaty is considered a done thing since there is a clear majority in favour and President Christofias is committed to honour his predecessors signature.

    [03] US - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The US has not changed its position on Cyprus, State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey has said. He was responding to questions about Washingtons position vis-a-vis political equality in Cyprus, at the regular weekly briefing, when he was invited to comment on a statement by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat who talked about ``a new partnership state which will be formed and will be based on political equality``.

Ill let them speak for themselves. Our belief, though, is that there needs to be a resolution to this issue brought about through negotiations and done so through the support of the United Nations and the efforts there, he added.

He expressed optimism about a resolution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of a decision by the Cyprus government and the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community to engage with one another in dialogue and discussion, supported by Greece and Turkey.

    [04] CYPRUS - FRANCE - DEFENCE

The House of Representatives has unanimously ratified an agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and France on cooperation in defence issues.

The agreement for military and technical cooperation in various sectors was signed in Paris on 28 February 2007 for a ten-year period and can be renewed for another ten years.

According to the agreement, the parties aim at contributing to maintaining stability and peace, and facing challenges in the security sector.
