  • [01] CYPRUS - INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN`S DAY

The government of Cyprus has pledged to continue creating the circumstances for socioeconomic development which will improve further the quality of life of all children in Cyprus.

This is stressed in a press release issued by the office of the Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, on the occasion of the International Childrens Day, celebrated 1st June.

In his message, Stephanou notes that millions of children around the world die of hunger, fall victims of exploitation and ill treatment and have no medical care or access to education.

The government sends its wishes to all children in Cyprus and recognising that children are the hope for a better future, it has already adopted the ten articles of the World Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the press release says.

It is added that the Declaration notes that a child must be given opportunities and facilities to enable him to develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity.

The child shall have the right to adequate nutrition, housing, entertainment, recreation and medical services. The child, for the full and harmonious development of his personality, needs love and understanding, the press release notes.

To that end, the government of Cyprus underlines the important role of the Cypriot Commissioner for Childrens Rights.

The government will continue to support the institution of the Commissioner for Childrens Rights and make every effort to create circumstances of socioeconomic development which will improve further the quality of life of all children in Cyprus, the press release says.
