[03] COUNCIL OF EUROPE CYPRUS SUPPORT

President of the Council of Europe Lluis Maria de Puig and Secretary General of the Council Terry Davis have reaffirmed their support to efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. They also expressed hope that these efforts would soon produce results that would lead to the reunification of Cyprus and its people, which have been divided since Turkish troops invaded in 1974.

Both de Puig and Davis had separate meetings on Thursday with President of the House of Representatives Marios Karoyan, on the sidelines of the European meeting of parliament presidents, taking place in Strasbourg. During the opening of the meeting, de Puig announced that the next meeting would be held in Cyprus in 2010.

Karoyan also met Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mateo Sorinas and President of the Armenian National Assembly Tigran Torosyan. During the meetings, Karoyan spoke about current developments in the Cyprus problem and efforts by bicommunal teams of experts (six working groups and seven technical committees) to make progress towards the resumption of substantive negotiations, leading to a settlement. Sorinas expressed the readiness of the Council of Europe to help efforts to reach a solution, and thanked Karoyan for the invitation to organise the next meeting in Cyprus in 2010.
