The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) has announced the launch of the Greek and Turkish versions of its website at http://www.cmp-cyprus.org, with a view to facilitate the access of both the Greek-speaking and the Turkish-speaking Cypriots to information pertaining to the activities of the CMP.

CMP, a tripartite committee comprising representatives of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities and a UN appointed representative, is involved in a process of exhumation and identification of remains of missing persons in Cyprus. It was set up in the early 1980s and in the recent past it has stepped up its work to help resolve this humanitarian issue.

``The Committee hopes that the website will encourage individuals in possession of any information concerning the whereabouts of Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot persons missing since 1964 or 1974 to come forward,`` it says in a press release.

    [02] EU - DROUGHT

Cyprus has applied to the European Union for funding through state subsidies for producers who have been affected by prolonged drought.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Panicos Pouros submitted the application to the EU Council of Ministers of Agriculture.

Pouros, along with Director of the Department of Agriculture Christodoulos Photiou, represented Cyprus at the two-day meeting of the EU Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The Cypriot delegation cited article 88 (2) of the Treaty, which provides for exceptional funding throudh state subsidies. Unanimity of the EU27 is necessary for approval of the request and the application is expected to be discussed at the next meeting.

In order to promote the application, Pouros held bilateral meetings with Danish Minister of Agriculture Kjer Eva Hansen and Slovenian Minister of Agriculture and President of the Council on agricultural issues Iztor Jarc.
