  • [01] MARFIN POPULAR BANK - AGM

Marfin Popular Bank is set to maintain its profits in 2008, in spite of the worldwide crisis in financial sector, and its robustness with a big capital sufficiency. The Banks Executive Chairman Andreas Vgenopoulos has given assurances to shareholders that despite the international economic crisis, the Bank will maintain ``strong profitability.`` However, he also said that the Bank is not expected to achieve the target of 600 million in 2008.

Addressing the Bank`s Annual General Assembly, Vgenopoulos said that the current international financial crisis cannot but have repercussions on corporate plans of all banks. ``The prevailing belief that the 80% of the credit crisis is behind us may be too optimistic,`` he said. ``According to our estimations, we believe the banks profits can move in the wide range of 500 - 600 million euro,`` he said, adding that ``the bad news is that the 600 million profitability target seems too optimistic.``

In 2007 the banks profits increased by 130%, reaching 563,4 mln euro, its loans rose by 46,6% to 17,6 billion euro, its deposits by 27,6 to 20,7 billion euro and its own capital increased by 14,6% to 3,48 billion euro. ``In any case despite the international credit and financial crisis we will have a healthy bank, robust with big capital sufficiency,`` Vgenopoulos said, adding that we do not intend to assume more risks than we have for the sake of impressing analysts and institutional investors.

    [02] ARMY CHIEF - ROMANIA

National Guard Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas will pay an official visit to Romania 19 - 22 May at the invitation of Chief of the Armed Forces of Romania admiral Gheorghe Marin.

Bisbikas, who will be accompanied by a delegation of National Guard officials, will also meet Romanian Minister of Defense Teodor Melascanu. During his meetings, Bisbikas will discuss bilateral issues and military cooperation between Cyprus and Romania.

He will also lay a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier and attend military activities.

    [03] EU - DIALOGUE NIGHT

Cyprus will participate in the Dialogue Night event, which will take place on May 22 in 37 different countries of the European Union and the Mediterranean. The Dialogue Night falls under the 1001 Actions for Dialogue and is an initiative supported by the Anna Lindh Euro- Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures within the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture Olympia Stylianou has said that the 1001 Actions for Dialogue includes a wide array of cultural activities.

The concept of this event, she said, is to provide publicity to intercultural activities and cooperation between the states that participate within the network in order to jump start dialogue and further promote intercultural dialogue within society. The outcome of the parallel actions will be presented at the Ministerial meeting of the Ministers of Culture, to be held in Athens at the end of May.

In Cyprus, the Dialogue Night includes a wide range of activities (music, poetry, athletics, tele-conferencing, treasure hunts and critical workshops and debates on racism). Some of them are bicommunal with the participation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The events in Cyprus are being organised through the cooperation of six organisations of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation Cyprus National Network and supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
