[01] EU-SERBIA AGREEMENT KYPRIANOU
The European Union and Serbia signed Tuesday a Stabilisation and
Association Agreement. The Agreement was adopted during the session of
the General Affairs and External Relations Council.
The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Marcos Kyprianou, speaking during the
session, welcomed the signing of the Agreement. In addition, he pointed
out that Cyprus was always supporting the adoption of the Stabilisation
and Association Agreement with Serbia as soon as possible. At the same
time, Kyprianou expressed hope that Serbia will become an EU candidate
country soon.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Council examined the situation in
Zimbabwe. In the conclusions of todays Council meeting, the EU Foreign
Ministers judged that it was unacceptable and unjustifiable not to have
declared the results of the presidential elections four weeks after the
ballot. The EU therefore calls for the election results to be announced
immediately, as delay creates suspicion as to the credibility of the
election process. Speaking on that issue, the Cypriot Foreign Minister
stressed that despite the results have not yet been declared, the
elections as such, consist a positive step towards the democratization
of the country.
Zimbabwe, Kyprianou concluded, is in a very difficult road to
democracy, and EU should offer its help.
