[01] BRITISH ENVOY - CYPRUSBritain believes there is now a real opportunity for a political settlement in Cyprus, that will reunite the country, and welcomes the commitment of the political leadership to implement the process agreed by the leaders of the islands two communities.In statements to the press, having concluded her meetings in Cyprus, Britain`s Special Representative for Cyprus Joan Ryan expressed full support for the ongoing process that has begun between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities and stressed that London will not do anything to derail that process. She also said that the property issue, security concerns and the functionality and viability of the solution are some problematic areas which the leaders of the two communities will have to tackle. Ryan described her visit as really interesting and exciting, saying that she saw a very significant change of mood, a positive feeling among the people, a strong sense of optimism and a belief that this is a real opportunity to solve the problem. The priority now must be to move to rapid and full implementation of the March 21 agreement, she added, and described the establishment of bicommunal technical committees and working groups as a very important step. [02] BRITISH MP - CYPRUSDeputy President of the House of Commons Sir Michael Lord said he would be passing on information about Cyprus and its political problem, which he gathered during meetings in Nicosia with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, President of the House of Representatives Marios Karoyan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou.The British official expressed hope for a settlement of the Cyprus problem the soonest possible. ``I would like to express my best wishes that the Cyprus problem will be solved in the future and as soon as possible,`` he said. ``Really I have learned a lot about Cyprus and the Cyprus problem. All this information I will take with me and share it,`` he added. [03] FINANCE MINISTER - OIL PRICESCypriot Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said the new increase in oil prices worldwide was an unpleasant economic development that would undoubtedly affect the macroeconomic indices of the island`s economy.Commenting on the new rise, Stavrakis said that the new increase ``creates inflation tendencies and reduces the citizens` available income, since a larger part of the family budget will be allocated to the purchase of fuel.`` However, he expressed optimism that this would not affect the government`s plans to a great extent. [04] CYPRUS RALLYPreparations are underway for Cyprus Rally 2008, an event described by its organisers as ``one of the most exciting`` of the FIA motorsport calendar, which will take place in Cyprus from May 16 to 18.The rally course, looping through the pine clad Troodos mountains, has again been revamped, with new tracks carved which will test the abilities of the seasoned competitors from all over Europe and the region, including 23 who are challenging for the FIA Middle East Championship, of which the Cyprus Rally is part.
