[01] IACOVOU - NAMI - SPEHARThe UN are expected to announce on Wednesday the date on which joint Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot working groups and technical committees will begin to work, to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations. Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou made the announcement after a meeting with UN Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar and Ozdil Nami, adviser to the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat. He said organisational matters, administrative concerns and other related issues were on the agenda of todays meeting, adding that everybody hopes that the work of the technical committees and the working groups will begin this week.We are talking about 13 technical committees and working groups, comprising 150 persons in total from both communities and the UN, who will be meeting regularly. We have to sort out certain organisational issues, he told the press. Asked about problems that have to be dealt with, he said people working for hours have to have access to drinking water, coffee and other facilities such as printers, computers, secretarial staff. Iacovou ruled out the possibility that the two community leaders will be present at the launch of the work of the working groups and technical committees, which were set up following an agreement last month between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. The Presidential Commissioner said that the first meeting will probably be a joint meeting of all the members of the committees and the groups. The working groups are likely to meet in the mornings and the technical committees in the afternoon. [02] CYPRUS ACCOUNTS - SURPLUS IN 2007The Cyprus government accounts for 2007 show a surplus of 505.5 mn euro. According to a press release by the states statistical service (CyStat), on the basis of the preliminary data on the general government accounts for the period January-December 2007, compiled in accordance to EU concepts and definitions, the total revenue amounted to 7303,7 mn euro (19.8% increase compared to the corresponding period of 2006), while total expenditure reached 6798,2 mn euro, (8.4% increase).The above numbers resulted to a surplus of 505.5 mn euro as compared to 172.5 mn euro deficit in the corresponding period of the previous year. The main categories of revenue for the period September-December 2007 were: taxes on production and imports 887,7 mn euro (30,2% increase), of which VAT was 456,5 mn euro (24% increase), taxes on income and wealth 689,4 mn euro (51.9% increase). Revenue from sales of goods and services increased by 85% as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The main categories of expenditure for the period September-December 2007 were: compensation of employees 659 mn euro (5.8% increase), and social transfers 557,3 mn euro (7.6% decrease),current transfers reached 197.3 mn(139,4% increase).
