  • [01] IACOVOU - NAMI - COMMITTEES AND GROUPS - AGREEMENT

    Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, adviser to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, have agreed on the agenda of 13 working groups and technical committees, during a meeting they had Monday here in the presence of the UN Special Representative to Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.

    Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Talat agreed 21 March 2008 to ask their respective advisers, George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, to meet in order to set up a number of working groups and technical committees and establish their agendas in the most expeditious way possible.

    Iacovou will meet Tuesday with Spehar in order to discuss technical issues, after which, as he said, he will be in a position to announce when the working groups and technical committees will begin their work. He expressed the belief that this is going to happen this week.

    Speaking to the press after his meeting with Nami, Iacovou said that after a long meeting with Nami and Spehar I am in the happy position to announce that we have agreed on the agenda of the 13 working groups and technical committees.

    Asked about the number of people who will comprise the working groups and technical commeties, he said that there is a long list of persons which has not been completed yet and that this will be announced quite soon.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory

    [02] CZECH PRIME MINISTER - CYPRUS QUESTION

    Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Mirek Topolanek said his country insists on the implementation of Turkeys European obligations towards the Republic of Cyprus.

    Speaking at a press conference, through an interpreter, after a meeting with the Cypriot President Demetris Christofias, Topolanek who is on an official visit to Cyprus, said that his country will hold the EU Presidency the first six months of 2009 and will assist in any possible way the Cyprus efforts.

    In his statements President Christofias noted the traditionally friendly bilateral relations, adding that they discussed the Cyprus issue and steps the Czech Republic could take to assist these efforts.

    [03] BRITISH ENVOY - CYPRUS QUESTION

    Britain`s Special Representative for Cyprus Joan Ryan believes that now is the best opportunity for Cyprus to be reunified on the basis of a bicomunal, bizonal fereration.

    Speaking in Athens after a meeting with the Greek Foreign Minister, Dora Bakoyanni, she said the meeting was very good and constructive.

    She said that everyone agrees and encourages moves to make headway towards a solution, following the recent meeting between the President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Leader Mexmet Ali Talat, .

    She also noted that as a guarantor power, Britain is doing whatever it takes to support and encourage progress towards a political settlement.

    [04] FINANCE MINISTER - UKRAINE

    Finance Minister Harilaos Stavrakis has been assured by Ukraine that Cyprus is not and will not be included in the countrys tax black list.

    Speaking at the airport on arrival from the Ukraine, Stavrakis said these assurances were given to him at meetings with government officials in Kiev.

    He expressed optimism that in a few weeks time the two governments will be able to sign an agreement to avoid double taxation.

    This, he pointed out, will benefit both countries.
