  • [01] ĒĻUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Progress regarding the Cyprus problem depends on the work that will be done by the working groups and the technical committees, which were set up in order to prepare the ground for substantive talks on Cyprus issue, House President Marios Karoyan has said.

Karoyan, who was speaking after a meeting he had with Lin Jinjun, Deputy Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Communist Party of China, expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the meeting.

I had the opportunity to inform Mr. Jinjun about the recent developments on the Cyprus problem and to reiterate Cyprus commitment to a viable and functional solution based on the UN resolutions, the High Level Agreements, and the EU principles and values.

In addition, Karoyan said, we discussed how to strengthen further bilateral relations between China and Cyprus.

    [02] STEPHANOU - LEDRAS

Cyprus Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that Ledras Street is expected to open on Thursday at 0900 local time (0600 GMT).

Invited to comment on information by the Turkish side that Turkey will insist on the presence of at least one armed soldier in the area, Stephanou said that we are not commenting on any information diffused through the media or through other means. We will see how things are formed on the ground, having in mind the agreement concluded on the opening of Ledra Street, he added.

    [03] CYPRIOT FM - USA - MEETINGS

The two communities in Cyprus are ready to solve the Cyprus problem and now it is time to have the support of the international community, Cypriot Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou has said.

Kyprianou, who departed for the US, said he would hold there a series of meetings with US government officials, including Chairman of the Senate Joe Biden and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte due to Condoleezza Rices participation in the NATO meeting in Romania.

Kyprianou was also invited to comment on statements made by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza who expressed the US readiness to contribute to efforts to solve the Cyprus issue provided that the two communities are ready.

He described Bryzas statements as positive, saying that he would discuss with Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and other US officials how Washington could contribute effectively to the process.

I believe that the two communities in Cyprus are ready. We have the 21st of March 2008 decisions before us. Now it is the time to have the right support for this effort on principle issues which should be included in the solution of the Cyprus problem, he pointed out.
