  • [01] UN - LEDRA STREET

UN Spokeswoman Michelle Montas said on Wednesday that ``the UNDP, with the funds of the European Union, today completed a safety check of the area of the proposed Ledra Street crossing point in Nicosia.``

``The check for unexploded oldness was necessary to secure buildings before of the opening of the crossing point. A six-person action team conducted the search with support of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). No dangerous items were found,`` she added.

Quoting UNFICYP, Montas said the advisors of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus ``have agreed, in accordance with the agreement reached by the leaders, to establish as soon as possible several specific groups and technical committees.``

``Both advisors agreed to establish further working groups and technical committees as required, in order to ensure that their respective leaders may be able to negotiate as effectively as possible on the full spectrum of issues to be discussed in Cyprus,`` she noted.

The advisors, she pointed out, have agreed to meet again on Friday under UN auspices.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - RUSSIA

The Russian Federation as a permanent member of the UN Security Council has a role to play in the creation of the necessary international legal and political framework for the solution of the Cyprus problem, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has said.

In his first interview to a Russian media, the magazine ``Greece`` published in Moscow, Christofias praised Russia`s principled position on Cyprus, recalling that ``in many occasions Russia played an important role in maintaining the independent Cypriot state.``

Replying to questions on Cyprus issue, President Christofias reiterated that Nicosia aims at the implementation of the July 8, 2006, agreement and the resumption of negotiations for a comprehensive settlement.

    [03] IACOVOU - NAMI - MEETING

Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, and Ozdil Nami, adviser to the Turkish Cypriot leader, agreed on Wednesday, in the context of the agreement reached by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, to establish, as soon as possible, six working groups and seven technical committees.

Specifically, as Iacovou stated after the meeting, the two advisors have agreed to establish the following Working Groups: Governance and power-sharing, EU matters, Security and guarantees, Territory, Property, and Economic matters.

Iacovou and Nami have also agreed to establish the following Technical Committees: Crime/Criminal matters, Economic and commercial matters, Cultural heritage, Crisis management, Humanitarian matters, Health, and Environment.

    [04] CYPRUS - MOLLER - REPLACEMENT

Cypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has expressed hope that the replacement of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus would not cause any delays in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, and said he was certain that the UN were taking all possible measures to avert any difficulties.

Replying to questions, Stephanou said the term in office of current Representative Michael Moller expired at the end of the month and that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has already appointed Director of Europe and America at the UN Department of Political Affairs Elizabeth Spehar as interim head of the UN mission in Cyprus.
