[01] BRITAIN - CYPRUSBritish Foreign Secretary David Miliband welcomed a meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, adding that it was a step towards real progress in the region and demonstrates the sort of leadership needed to reunite Cyprus.According to the website of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Miliband also reaffirmed the British Governments commitment to the reunification of Cyprus, stressing that the agreement to start the work at expert level is especially encouraging and important gestures like the opening of Ledra Street will improve the atmosphere. Welcoming news of successful talks in Cyprus, Foreign Secretary Miliband, said: Good news from Cyprus. The meeting between the leaders of the two communities is a step towards real progress in the region and demonstrates the sort of leadership needed to reunite Cyprus. The agreement to start the work at expert level is especially encouraging and important gestures like the opening of Ledra Street will improve the atmosphere, he added expressing the hope that both leaders will continue to show courage and determination, enabling resumption of negotiations facilitated by the UN, and that both sides work hard to see this through to a comprehensive settlement. For the British Government, I reaffirm our commitment to the reunification of Cyprus. We stand ready to assist the process in any way we can, Miliband concludes. Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on Friday to ask their respective advisers to meet this coming week in order to set up a number of working groups and technical committees, establish their agendas and also in the most expeditious way possible. They also decided to meet again in three months to review the work of the committees dealing with aspects of the Cyprus problem, the results of which will be used to start negotiations under UN auspices for a solution. They have also agreed that Ledra Street will, as soon as technically possible, open and function in accordance to the established practices at other crossings.
