  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS T/C LEADER MEETING - STATEMENT

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat met on Friday at the residence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller.

President Christofias was accompanied by Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, while Talat was accompanied by his adviser Ozdil Nami. They were greeted at the venue by Moller.

In a statement after the meeting, Moller said the leaders of the two communities exchanged views on a number of issues and agreed that their advisers should meet in the coming week.

They furthermore agreed to meet three months from now to review work of working groups and technical committees, and use the results to start negotiations.

Former President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of UN official Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] BRITAIN CYPRUS

British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jim Murphy has said that a new opportunity now exists to make substantial progress on the Cyprus problem, adding that Britain encourages both sides on the island to move forward.

Replying to a question by Labour MPs Hywel Francis at the House of Commons regarding the steps taken to support the reunification of Cyprus, following the recent presidential elections on the island, Murphy said ``the Foreign Secretary has already met the new Cypriot Foreign Minister`` and that ``the Prime Minister has written to President Christofias inviting him to the UK.``

    [03] EP SOCIALIST GROUP CYPRUS

A delegation of the Socialist Group at the European Parliament, headed by President of the Group Martin Schulz and Vice President Mechtild Rothe, will be arriving in Cyprus on March 28 for an official visit, at the invitation of President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK Yiannakis Omirou.

During their stay in Cyprus, the members of the delegation will be received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and will have a meeting with Omirou, after which Schulz and Omirou will give a joint press conference and will attend a working lunch.
