  • [01] KING OF JORDAN - CYPRUS PROBLEM

King Abdullah II of Jordan has said his government would continue to support Cyprus at international fora, particularly in relation to efforts to reunite Cyprus.

The assurances were given to Cyprus new Ambassador to Jordan, based in Damascus, Efstathios Orphanides, who presented his credentials to the King, during a formal ceremony earlier this month, according to an official press release.

During a short meeting with Ábdullah II, Orfanides expressed to the King of Jordan the gratitude and appreciation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and that of the Cypriot people for the support that Jordan provides to Cyprus, particularly on the Cyprus problem at various international fora.

King Ábdullah II assured Ambassador Orphanides that his countrys support to Cyprus will continue.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS ISSUE

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has stressed that a UN-brokered agreement, in July 2006, must be the basis of any talks aimed at a political settlement.

The Greek-Cypriot side insists that the basis of meetings and talks, if a serious effort is to be carried out for the solution of the Cyprus problem, is the July agreement, he said.

The agreement provides for preparatory discussions at committee level ahead of substantive negotiations, between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, leading to a settlement that would reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
