[01] FRANCE - CYPRUS - DIALOGUEFrench Ambassador to Cyprus Nicolas Galey has assured that his country encourages the spirit of dialogue for a Cyprus settlement, which has been expressed on the island.Speaking after a meeting with President Demetris Christofias, Galey said he handed the President the original copy of a letter by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who expresses the country`s commitment to continue its particularly close relation with Cyprus, and renewed Sarkozy`s invitation to President Christofias to visit Paris. ``I remitted to the President the original copy of the letter of President Sarkozy, transmitted to him on 25 February, the day after the second round of the election. This letter expresses France`s commitment to continue the particularly close relation we have with Cyprus,`` Galey said. He added that in his letter, Sarkozy ``also assures Mr. Christofias of the friendship and support of France, in particular for efforts aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.`` [02] CYPRUS - WATERMinister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Michalis Polynikis said on Friday that the water shortage problem in Cyprus could be solved either by bringing water to the island in tankers from Lebanon or imposing water restrictions.The Minister said water restrictions could either be in the form of cuts during certain hours of the day, which he did not applaud, or with the quota system thus preventing waste, which he did applaud. Speaking after a meeting at the Ministry on the water situation, Polynikis said the water boards, the municipalities and the communities would examine ways to implement the quota system, which could be applied soon. [03] EU REGIONAL POLICYEuropean citizens in their vast majority are convinced of the benefits of the EU regional policy, which accounts for more than one third of the EU budget, in their town, city or region, and want it to be more ambitious and tackle head on new challenges such as globalisation, the fight against climate change and demographic trends.These are the basic conclusions of the Eurobarometer survey of how Europeans perceive the EU regional policy, the results of which were released on Friday by Danuta Hubner, the Commissioner responsible for regional policy. For Cyprus, 68.8% of those asked believe that their town or region has benefited from EU support, while 25.5% said the opposite. Furthermore, 47% place funding the fight against climate change as a priority, 36% globalisation and 14% demographic changes.
